It’s a strong word, one that can take on many meanings — to approach or enter; an outburst of emotion; obtain, examine, or retrieve — but, ultimately informs what I do in a professional and creative manner. Access, as it pertains to archiving, is why I got into this profession. The ability to provide a window into history, to show the span and impact of someone’s collected work, to take the time to properly save, catalog and honor what we as a race have put into the world, and what we’ll ultimately leave behind for future generations. It’s a legacy worth preserving and over time, analyzing and finding meaning in. Creating a living archive, is an extraordinary way to bring these stories to life for everyone who wishes to see it. Whether it’s through a digital asset management system, providing a venue for people to hold and see the physical objects, or cataloging them with the utmost efficiency so that they aren’t lost to time — that they should keep on living through each generation’s ability to engage with them — it’s these access points that give a greater meaning to what I do. Creative access is an altogether different beast. It’s where I channel my energy to look at something in a new light. With photography, it’s about that particular moment and capturing something significant (or insignificant). I’m accessing my knowledge of composition, framing, lighting to create a still of time. These images hopefully evoke an atmosphere or thought independent of my own in which the viewer can access their own ideas.
